Content Advisories
Rated PG for adventure violence. People are hanged in this one. There are deaths by arrow and sword, and a fair amount of talk about killing and torture. After watching this movie most boys (and many girls) will seek any opportunity to play at fighting with swords.

Danny Kaye’s The Court Jester is a musical comedy riff on the film, and a pretty good followup. Kids who want more Robin Hood may enjoy Disney’s live-action The Story of Robin Hood and His Merrie Men (actually pretty decent) as well as their animated animal version.
Welcome to Sherwood
Seeing this for the first time in adulthood, I can’t comprehend how this was left out of the canon of annual network television events (The Wizard of Oz, Gone With the Wind, The Sound of Music). The kids (and you) will cheer at scene after scene of terrific action, featuring cinema’s most dashingly heroic outlaw and his band of merry men. They’ll boo at the sneering Prince John, the cowardly Sheriff of Nottingham, and the seething Sir Guy of Gisborne. Every age and gender will swoon over Errol Flynn and Olivia de Havilland as Robin and Maid Marian. The rousing (Academy Award-winning) score and eye-popping Technicolor only help to seal the deal. Kids may not grasp the finer points of the royal machinations or the enmity between Normans and Saxons, but it hardly matters because—Look! Peril! Flynn and Basil Rathbone’s final fencing duel is one of the greatest things Hollywood ever made. Seriously. LOOK IT UP. —
