I'm just not sure how well this plan was thought through
Meet the Robinsons comes from an awkward time in the history of Disney animated features. Partway through production came the merger with Pixar, after which John Lasseter and his team were given creative rein at the studio. Reportedly 60% of the movie was scrapped and reimagined. In the end there were seven (!) credited screenwriters, not including William Joyce (Rolie Polie Olie, George Shrinks, Robots, Rise of the Guardians, Epic), from whose picture book (A Day With Wilbur Robinson) the project was first launched. That pile-on of ideas, plus some playful exploration of visual space (the film was released in 3D) gives the film an overstuffed, throw-everything-at-the-screen feeling, what Lisa Scharzbaum called a “frantic, woo-woo, ding-dong, look-HERE-no-look-THERE! attention-shattering disorder.” But if you can embrace the movie as a diversionary pop confection, there’s plenty of fun to be had. —
